A hallucinogenic (psychedelic) agent. It may catalyzethe onset of emotional problems or psychosis in predisposedindividuals. Although the mechanism of action for hallucinogensis not understood, DOM is believed to act by being anagonist at serotonin 5-HT2 receptors. It causes hyperreflexia,restlessness, and perceptual alterations in illusions, includingchanges in touch, taste, and odor, and the thinking process issubstantially altered. At high doses, hallucinations and loss ofcontact with reality result. The duration of action may be16-24 h. Its LD50 is in mice 36 mg/kg, i.v., in rats 32.5 mg/kg, i.p., in dogs 7.2 mg/kg, i.v., and in monkeys 8 mg/kg, i.v.
